Top 12 Best Barndominium Builders In Minnesota (For 2025)

If you’re building a new home, the barndominium is one of the most popular options you can choose. Barndominiums, or barndos for short, rely on metal building kits and pole barns for a cost-effective but sturdy base for the home.

You get an exterior building shell at about 30-40% lower cost than a traditional home shell – which you can then kit out to look like anything from a cozy farmhouse to a sweeping modern home.

Plus, metal siding and roofing means your new barn home will be as maintenance-free as possible. That’s ideal for most.

And, with dozens of colors, trim, and fittings like balconies and porches to make your barn home look as beautiful on the outside as it does on the inside, your barndo can look as good as you want it to.

Of course, you’ll need a builder first, and the following includes 12 of the best in Minnesota.

  • Sherman Buildings
  • RAM Buildings
  • Structural Buildings
  • DC Builders
  • Hansen Pole Buildings
  • Rhino Steel
  • Morton Buildings
  • Wick Buildings
  • Worldwide Steel Buildings
  • Cleary Building Corp.
  • AmeriBuilt Steel Structures
  • Lester Buildings

1. Sherman Buildings

Sherman Buildings is a Mora-based pole barn builder offering everything from agricultural spaces to residential homes. The builder is family-owned and takes a hands-on approach to every building.

In addition, you can opt for either a turnkey approach or a DIY approach.

In the first, Sherman will take on every aspect of building the home, starting with building erection, pouring a floor, and finishing the interior. This means Sherman will handle everything and all you have to worry about is getting planning permission and working with Sherman on the design.

Alternatively, you can opt for a shell erection and then do the interior yourself.

Sherman uses wood post frames, concrete footings, and 29-gauge paneling. You get metal panels in your choice of colors. In addition, ridge vents and ventilation are included in every project.

2. RAM Buildings

RAM Buildings offers both wood post-frame buildings and steel building kits. This means you can opt for a barndominium with your choice of traditional foundation or not.

In addition, you can get kit homes and custom-designed homes with one or two stories.

RAM can also fully custom-design your barn home to include any design elements or customizations you want. That includes unique homes like split and raised roofs, dormers, glass walls, and much more.

RAM can also offer wood post-frame buildings if you prefer the cost and quick build-time of a pole barn instead of a metal barndominium.

However, RAM does not offer interior finishing. This means that they can offer the site prep, foundation, building erection, and typically insulation. From there, you’ll have to hand the project over to a general contractor or do the finishing yourself.

3. Structural Buildings

Structural Buildings offers a mix of post-frame and steel-frame buildings, giving you the option to design and work with whatever you want.

The builder primarily offers post-frame housing. However, you can also request a custom-engineered metal barndominium if you prefer.

In each case, you’ll get a custom building with metal siding and a structure of your choice. You can opt for a concrete slab floor with the pole barn as well – although it’s optional.

Structural Buildings is very similar to RAM. It also serves much of the same area. However, Structural Buildings also has demo homes you can go to see to get an idea of what the final result will be.

The company also has a lot of experience with agricultural and side buildings if you want to add to your home.

DC Builders is a barndominium builder offering barndo kits in wood and metal. Here, you typically get a pole barn, meaning you erect the building yourself without a foundation and then can choose to pour a floor if you prefer.

Alternatively, you can opt for a metal building kit to erect on your foundation. Either way, DC Builders does not handle erection in Minnesota and you’ll need a general contractor to erect the building kit and convert the interior.

However, DC Builders offers a highly customizable selection of barndominium kits. These include multistory homes and a range of residential fittings including doors and windows, dormers, pergolas, etc.

And, with trim and paneling options including either wood or metal, you’ll be able to make as many customizations to the exterior appearance of your home as you want.

You can also opt for a fully custom-made building designed around your specifications or sketches.

It’s also based in the state, meaning you’ll get fast delivery and cheap rates on that delivery. However, you will get a flat-packed barn home kit that you’ll need a general contractor to erect for you.

Hansen does not offer erection services. However, you do get a limited lifetime warranty on your new home kit, complete with everything you need to assemble the shell of your home.

You’ll also have to pick your doors and windows out and buy them yourself. Hansen offers metal siding and trim in a range of colors.

You can also add some residential customizations like lean-to awnings and porches, dormers, and pergolas. Plus, with two-story barn home kits available, this is a great option if you’re looking for a multi-story barn home.

Rhino Steel also offers relatively basic metal building kits, with some residential trim and paneling options.

Morton also works with contractors to allow them to offer foundations and building erection in the state of Minnesota, meaning you won’t have to figure out whether your general contractor can actually assemble a prefabricated steel building.

The company also offers a mix of barndominium kits and custom-engineered barn homes. However, if you want anything that looks like a home, you’ll have to go for the custom option.

Like with Rhino, Morton is not the place to go if you’re looking for a chic home. However, it can offer you a great deal in terms of cost-effectiveness, affordability, and customizations like porches, non-metal facades, and even multi-story barn kits.

Wick will show up, erect your building, and turn it over to you or your general contractors. This means they can then pour the concrete slab floor and convert the interior into whatever you want it to be.

Wick can also work with you to build extremely custom home designs including multi-story and completely unique buildings, which makes this pole barn supplier a great choice even if you want a luxury home.

Worldwide Steel will also offer interior dividing walls and wall systems, insulation, and other extras.

However, you’ll need a general contractor to do the interior finishing. You’ll also have to supply your own doors and windows if you want “residential” versions.

This means that Worldwide Steel is a great fit if you want a hands-on or DIY approach, but not so much if you want everything to be handled for you. However, if you do opt for a metal building kit from Worldwide Steel, you could have it done within 2-10 weeks.
