10 Amazing 6-Bedroom Barndominium Floor Plans You’ll Love

If you’re researching new build homes, barndominiums are one of the cheapest and fastest options for larger homes. That’s especially true if you want to cost-effectively install a larger home with a lot of bedrooms.

Luckily, barndominiums are easily built to nearly any size – with many accommodating up to 200 feet of width without the need for interior load-bearing walls. That gives you a great deal of flexibility and options to customize your home in the future.

While 6 bedrooms is a lot to plan around, you can often easily make space for as many bedrooms as you want. These barndominium floor plans offer a range of different layouts. Most are also single-story, but you can also opt for a two-story home.

And, you’ll benefit from quick build times (permit to moving in in as little as 6 months) and reduced building costs (as much as 30% lower than traditional stick-built housing) with every one of them.

6-Bed Barndominium House Plan Factors

If you’re planning to build a large home, you have to figure out how you’ll use it and what you’ll actually need to make your day-to-day life enjoyable.

Often, that means taking factors like lifestyle and workflow into account.

1. Work and Traffic Flow

The more people you have in your home, the more you have to worry about work and traffic flow. This refers to the passage of people from one place to another.

For example, if everyone is trying to move back to their bedrooms at once, is there enough space for people to walk by each other? Is the kitchen large enough to support a workflow with the number of people you want to cook with?

Do you have a longer counter space of a kitchen island to account for multiple people cooking? What about accessing toilets and utility rooms?

Thinking about how you walk to and from rooms and whether there’s space for everyone to conveniently move around is important.

Narrow hallways can save you space, but you might end up regretting them when standing in line to get through the hallway because you can’t easily pass someone else.

2. Layout

Bedroom layout is an important part of your floor plan. In addition, with six bedrooms, you’ll have a few options.

The first is to dedicate part of the home to a sleeping area with a family room or playroom in between instead of a hallway. This also works if you’re putting your bedrooms on a second floor.

The second is to spread the rooms out over the house with access to a central living area. Both get rid of the need for long hallways. However, they each have their pros and cons and will impact other aspects of the home.

For example, if you want to connect your bedrooms to your living area, you’ll have to play to be quiet when family members go to bed. On the other hand, if you relegate half the house to a sleeping area, you’ll have two very distinct parts of your home.

3. Lifestyle

Lifestyle should be a defining factor in your floor plan. For example, if you like to socialize, you probably don’t want the bedrooms right next to the living area, especially if you have small kids who will go to bed early.

On the other hand, if you have a workshop that you might use while kids are asleep or while others are socializing, you probably won’t want bedrooms next to that.

Considering how you’ll actually use your home and how different parts of the family will interact is an important aspect of your floor plan.

For example, it’s quite common for families with one older child to put a bachelor room on one side of the home – giving a teen relative freedom and privacy.

Younger kids can move into that as older kids move into college or out of the home – giving you the option to offer your oldest living at home as much privacy and freedom as possible.

However, you could also use the same tactic for having a different generation of parents or even grandparents come to live with you.

4. Bathrooms and Facilities

Most people prefer to have about one bathroom per two bedrooms to ensure that there’s not a line to use the showers and toilets in the morning. That might also mean setting up bedrooms with private bathrooms or shared bathrooms.

Bathrooms can often be overlooked when kids are small. After all, you might not need as many bathrooms when there are three family members.

However, the longer you stay in the home, the more important it will be to consider bathrooms, showers, and facilities to meet the needs of everyone in your family.

5. Parking

How many cars do you have now? How about in 10 years? Do you need a garage for your cars? Will it be attached or detached?

In most cases, you’ll want at least a two-car garage to go with a 6-bedroom home. However, you may want much larger, especially if the kids are going to be of the age to want their own cars within 10 years.

Once they move out, you can always convert that space into a workshop or a gym – but having it could be important for the coming period.

6. Style

Size isn’t always the most important part of your home. That’s true even if you have a family to fill every bedroom all at once. It’s also true if you’re looking for something more unique, like making a bed and breakfast.

You want your home to look and feel good. That means considering how the floor plan fits together, what kind of spaces you have, and how you can align those spaces to fit your needs.

If you want a modern and contemporary look, you might want to consider high ceilings, wide floor plans, and completely separate areas for bedrooms and kids.

On the other hand, if you want a more cozy look, you can lower the ceilings, have a second floor, integrate family areas and kitchens into the main living area, and otherwise bring everything together.

7. Versatility

The larger your family, the more your lifestyle is going to change over time. That means looking for a barndo floor plan that allows versatility.

The good news is that most barndos offer an extraordinary amount of versatility because there are no load bearing walls on the inside of the home.

If you don’t need a room anymore, you can just knock it out. However, it’s still a good idea to pick a home based on your ability to create offices, gyms, and studios out of bedrooms so you don’t just have empty rooms.
